I am Jim
Hi there!
Truth be told, photography began as a hobby for me. I used it more like a tool to keep my mind stimulated but I always loved the process of finding compositions that tell stories. I never believed I could make a career out of being a photographer, however. Not until my photo, Milky Way Over Historic Bodega ran on the cover of the Press Democrat the Sunday before Christmas, 2012 and then went on to win Congressman Jared Huffman's Sonoma County Landscape photo contest a few months later. These publications encouraged me so much, made me a believer, but with a family and mortgage - more like a hobby that could pay for itself type believer...I kept my 'day job'. Before becoming a full time photographer I directed a wilderness adventure program for teens called Go Adventure and following a fulfilling 25 year career in outdoor education, I was ready to spread my wings.
Since 2020 I have worked full-time as a commercial photographer, mostly doing architectural photography and video productions for businesses and the leisure industry. I still shoot landscapes, big wave surfing, night images and vineyards purely for joy of it and much of the content on this website is a result of that passion. I hope you find something here that connects with you to the extent that making the images connected with me.
Background: I grew up on the south shore of Long Island about 13 miles from Manhattan. I love the city but for me, being out in nature was where I found true happiness. I learned to surf near Point Lookout and took my first photography class at 4-H Camp in Riverhead at age 12. After earning a degree in Psychology from the University of Dayton in 1995 I moved to coastal Northern California and met my wife Tracy where we currently live with our two awesome kids. I spend as much time as possible outdoors, with family, adventuring, traveling and enjoying my home in Sonoma County, CA.
